I'd read about the Music Center's Drum Circle for awhile. Monthly and free, it looked like so much fun. Finally, one Saturday morning I went, and a miracle happened, well, for me anyway.
I don't play the drums. I've always liked to dance. But, I was determined that morning to join in and bang. Ever since I've lived here, I've been on sensory overload, and I wanted to let it all hang out.
The people who run "Drum Downtown" provide you with everything. Drums of all sizes and shapes. Castanets. Tambourines. You name it, they had it. So, I picked this big drum that I could barely carry, let alone play.
I parked myself next to a two-month-old and an 80-something-year-old. I was ready to drum. Our leader, a really nice guy with an Australian accent, kept us in the groove. For two hours, I pounded, beat, and banged my drum with the rest of the group. We were rockin'.
And towards the end when my fingers ached and my arms were ready to fall off, the head of marketing for the Music Center announced there would be a drawing for some prizes - and the top winner would win a $350 dollar drum. No way! I had never won anything in my life (I mean that!).
Roll the drums....it came down to the final prize drawing, and I just knew the really nice drum guy would draw my name. I just knew, like when you know it. No visualizations, affirmations, nada. I knew. And he did draw my name. And I won the $350 drum.
I walked home with "my drum" swaying to the city beat. I've put it in a place of honor in my loft. And yesterday, I took it to my friend Stacy's party. She's a singer/band leader/drummer (and a scientist) and she had an open mic for her many talented friends. I said, "Stacy, I'm going to play the drum with you, but only with you." And so I did, or rather we did. I smiled from ear to ear.
A new career in the making? Perhaps my own band? Who knows? But one thing is for sure, I was destined to go to that drum circle that day, and spark a spark that had been missing for a long time.
